Exercise therapy - for a longer and happier life!
Sep 25, 2024
When we think of exercise for our dogs, we often think it is all just the daily walk.
In fact, exercise therapy encompasses strengthening, stretching, balance and range of motion exercises to help optimise health.
Not only can exercise therapy significantly improve our quality of life and lifespan, but it can do the same for our beloved fluffy ones.
How exercise therapy helps improve length, and quality, of life
Reduces the risk of disease - Overweight dogs live on average 2 years less then dogs of a normal weight so by helping to manage weight, exercise therapy reduces the risk of conditions like diabetes and heart disease.
Strengthens muscles - exercise therapy strengthens muscles to help improve your dog's function, decrease their pain and improve their quality of life.
Decreases incontinence - if incontinence is due to difficulty and slowness standing then strengthening can help them get up quicker and do potty in their proper potty place.
Increases health and happiness - by learning different and new exercises it can help provide mental stimulation, improve bonding and help to prevent boredom.
Fights the slowing down of ageing - arthritis is the second leading reason for elective euthanasia. People see their dog is slowing down and feel that they’re too old and their quality of life is suffering, which can lead to euthanasia. By fighting muscle loss and slowing down, exercise therapy can help give them extra life.

Exercise Safety Tips
Hydration - ensure your dog has access to plenty of fresh water before, during, and after exercise. They can get particularly thirsty if you are giving them treats for training the exercises.
Fatigue - watch your dog's body language and energy levels and if they seem tired or struggling, give them a few minutes rest and then try again. If they aren't performing the exercise correctly it is ok to leave it for that day and start fresh the next day.
Pain - if your dog suffers from pain try and time the exercises to be done about 30 minutes after pain relief is taken so they have optimum effect.
