Is Your Dog's Walk Telling You Something?
Dec 26, 2024
Almost daily as I drive around to visit patients I will see dogs that walk with signs of pain. It really breaks my heart and I always wonder if their dog parent already knows!
Paying attention to subtle changes in our dog’s gait and posture can help us identify if they are in pain and in need of a vet review.
Here are some signs to look out for:
1. Head Position
A healthy dog typically holds their head in a natural, upright position while walking.
Signs of Concern:
- Head held unusually low may indicate neck pain or discomfort.
- A head that bobs up and down with each step might suggest pain in a front leg.
2. Tail Position
Most dogs walk with a relaxed tail that moves gently or wags. Tails help with weight bearing and can indicate problematic areas.
Signs of Concern:
- A tail held down or only to one side may signal pain
3. Limping
A healthy gait is when weight is evenly distributed on all four limbs.
Signs of Concern:
- If a leg is being held up so they don't want to put pressure on it at all
- Taking some steps quickly or skipping/hopping can mean they are uncomfortable putting weight on it.
4. Posture
A well-aligned dog walks with their spine straight and body balanced.
Signs of Concern:
- An arched back or hunched posture could signal abdominal pain or spinal issues.
- A tilted body or leaning to one side might suggest neurological problems or inner ear issues
5. Energy
A healthy dog without pain or heart issues will be happy to walk and tolerate it well.
Signs of concern:
- Slowing down or stopping can indicate a pain or difficulty breathing due to heart or lung issues
6. Behaviour changes
Changes in your dog's usual behaviour on a walk can indicate a problem. If they were friendly and excited but not they are not, this signals a problem.
Signs of concern:
- Increased aggression or fear of other people and dogs can indicate pain or anxiety.
Bonus tip - Use your hearing!
A healthy dog’s steps are even and rhythmic.
Signs of Concern:
- Dragging or scraping their nails on the ground can indicate neurological or muscular issues.
- Clicking sounds may come from arthritic joints.
If you notice any of these signs when walking your dog, please take note of them and book a vet appointment to let them know what you're noticing. Your dog may be suffering in pain and only shows signs when they're walking, you could be helping to identify and treat it and help them be more comfortable!
