Walking an arthritic dog

Oct 01, 2024

Should you walk an arthritic dog?

YEEEEEEES! Walking is essential for all dogs. It helps them communicate with the outside world, helps them stretch their muscles and joints, helps their cardiovascular health and helps their bowel movements!

All dogs need to go for a walk - especially to sniff the outside world!

How long should an arthritic dog be walked?

This is one of the most common questions I see in canine arthritis groups and it is akin to “how long is a piece of string”?

All you need to do is keep an eye out for signs of fatigue and/or pain.

If you notice your dog starting to show any signs then it means the walk is too long.

If symptoms start, for example, 20 minutes into the walk then be sure that the walk doesn’t exceed 19 minutes!

What do these signs look like?

Signs to look out for include:

  • Head and tail held low
  • Slowing down
  • Sitting down
  • Dragging paws
  • Limping

Head down whilst walking (not sniffing) can be a sign of pain or fatigue.

Is walking enough for arthritic dogs?

Unfortunately, walking alone isn’t enough to strengthen their muscles. While walking is wonderful for your dog, incorporating additional exercises is essential to help support arthritic joints to decrease pain and improve movement.

 And….

Don’t forget…it is their walk!

Let your dog take the lead and enjoy their time outside. This is their moment of joy and exploration.
